Peewee Flames Capture Silver at Lawfield Tournament
We started out with our opening game tying the Mountain Bruins 0-0, it was a hard fought game and the Flames played very well. Our next game against the Stoney Creek Leafs was another exciting game. The Leafs started with a quick goal against us but we responded with 3 goals over the game with excellent passing and our wingers doing a great job of rushing the net and pushing for the rebounds to make it a 3-1 game. We kept the momentum going taking on the Lawfield Canadians in yet again another exciting game. With our defense stepping up and the fantastic play of our forwards we went on once again to defeat the Canadiens 4-2.
Winning this game gave us the opportunity to advance to the semi-finals. We started out the morning in the semi-finals playing the Lawfield Penguins. Our team started out a little slow but by the end of the first period we were playing at full speed. It was an excellent game that went both ways and in the end we were victorious 2-1 and ready to move on to the finals.
The Championship game was hard fought. The competition was tough but getting plagued with penalties took it's toll on the players and we lost to the Lawfield Leafs 3-1.
The Lawfield Houseleague Tournament has been around for a long time and we would like to thank Peter Deblock and all the volunteers for making this a fun and exciting tournament The Coaches and Players would like to thank all the parents, family and friends that came out to cheer on the Flames. I'd like to thank every player on our team for the outstanding effort that each and everyone brought to the game. We couldn't have asked for a better group of boys and girl to represent Ancaster in this Tournament.
The Flames Coaching Staff: Alex, Bruce and Pram

Every kid in us has a wish or dream.
One of our FLAMES player got his wish when the Flames management sent Clayton Stewart to Collingwood to represent the PEEWEE FLAMES in cheering on our hometown hero Brad Martin as he carried the Olympic torch down the Blue Mountain ski hill. Clayton was a great representative and we are very proud of him.
The Martins and Stewarts are close family friends and had the opportunity to spend this very special occasion together. We are very lucky to have a role model like Brad in our community.
The picture below shows Brad Martin and Clayton Stewart holding the Olympic Torch. Great success to Brad in the Olympics. |

Ancaster Selects Win Peewee AE Title in Grimsby
GRIMSBY – Jan. 17, 2010 – David brought down not just one but several Goliaths last weekend when the Ancaster Avalanche Peewee Selects buried the Pelham Panthers 4-0 on Sunday afternoon to win the Peewee AE championship at the Grimsby Winter Classic hockey tournament.
The rare accomplishment of a Select team of house league all-stars scoring a decisive triumph in a tournament for rep teams brought 17 jubilant 11- and 12-year-olds spilling onto the ice in a celebration that rocked the rafters of the Peach King Centre. Soon after, the dressing room walls shook with loud choruses of We Are the Champions while boys posed for personal photos with their well deserved tournament victory banner – a first for many of them.
The Selects rode an absolutely tireless effort from every player, delivering a textbook example of outskating and out-hitting an opponent. Scoring came in a well rounded attack from four different players: Nolan Roth, Paul Vallentin, Mark Szostak and Liam Gallagher, each of whom played their best games of the season. Gallagher deservedly took player-of-the-game honours for his ferocious puck pursuit at both ends and his consistent work in bumping the opposition off the puck.
Evan Fitzpatrick pitched in two assists in what can only be described as a breakout tournament for the big winger. He almost singlehandedly turned around a slow start for the team in an earlier 3-3 tie against Pelham.
But in the final, the Selects had a hunger to win that was awesome to watch. Kishan Patel thrilled the fans with his energy and heart, while Lee Southerst showed his tenacious drive to backcheck in one end and take the puck to the net in the other. Eric Harbour finished every check like a pro, and Joe Griffin demonstrated an amazing ability to take a pass on the fly and rush the puck.
On defence, the pairings of Dalton Storoschuk and David Wood, Brenton Urban and Ty Patry, and Simon Ranger and Nick Bird were rock solid and unbeatable. Storoschuk potted a couple of crucial goals with his quick-release point shot in this tournament, and all six defencemen showed they could carry the puck and make smart plays to ignite the offence as well.
Ryan Gruza and Hayden Wirzman combined for the shutout on Sunday, amazingly their second shared shutout of the tournament. Gruza also played as if possessed by an octopus in a solo performance against the Grimsby Peach Kings on Saturday night with the much-feared Wirzman out, demonstrating the Selects’ depth in goal as he led the team to a 3-3 tie.
To get to the final, the Selects had earlier blanked the Stouffville Clippers 6-0, getting contributions from five different scorers. Then, with the prize on the line on Sunday, the Selects came out with ferocity and a hunger for victory that was simply undeniable.
Head coach Wayne Urban, assistants Mark Vallentin and Alex Patry, trainer Pram Patel and manager John Southerst told the boys they could not be more proud of them, and they deserved to celebrate.
