Candidates interested in coaching next season need to submit a written application by February 15, 2012. A Selection Committee, consisting of the Director of Rep Hockey, Director of Coach & Player development and a non-executive member, will review the applications and conduct interviews with the candidates.
When rating candidates, the selection committee considers a number of factors - previous coaching experience, coaching certifications, performance in the interview, whether the candidate is a non-parent, results of the Parent Survey for current coaches, length of time with existing team, suitability of parent/child placement, references and skill level rating of the coach’s child relative to other players if the child is trying out for the team.
The Selection Committee then makes a recommendation of the best candidates for each team. These recommendations are discussed and ratified at the Board level. Applicants that the committee selects as the primary choice for a given team will be contacted by the committee after executive board approval and offered that team for the upcoming season. Upon the applicant’s acceptance of the team, non successful applicants will be contacted immediately to notify them of the committees’ decision. All applicants will be given feedback on why they weren’t successful.
Please feel free to contact John Alpaugh or Mark Davies to discuss the coaching role in advance of the interview if you want to get a better understanding of the process and expectations of a head coach.
Applications for the 2012-2013 Season
The submission of applications opened January 12 and closes at 6:00PM, February 15, 2012.
The application process is simple. Just send me (John Alpaugh, Director of Coach & Player Development) a package which contains the following information:
1) Your name, phone number and a legible email address. All of my correspondence with applicants and the selection committee will be via email.
2) A brief history of your coaching experience. This can be hockey or any other sport or it may be blank, perhaps you are at the start of an illustrious coaching career. If it is extensive please just list the year and the category – I do not need the team’s record or your achievements at this point.
3) The team category which you would like to coach in 2012-2013. You can pick from the following list (you can choose more than one). If you are not sure whether your child is AE or AA caliber then list both, we have a process for working through that issue.

4) A statement of your coaching philosophy. This MUST include a statement about winning vs development, a statement about equal ice time and bench management. It can include anything else that you would like to write but these elements must be contained within your philosophy.
5) Any compelling facts, figures or essays as to why you are the right coach for the job. This can range from a single sentence to an eloquent dissertation - it is your chance to tell us what you bring to the position.
Please ensure that you have each of these elements covered and then place your application in an 8.5x11in. envelope and address it to JOHN ALPAUGH – AMHL COACH APPLICATION. Then carefully stuff it into the AMHL mailbox located near dressing room six at Morgan A before 6PM on February 15, 2012.
