Ancaster Tykes Win Silver in First Tournament in Brampton

This fine group of 6 and 7 year old hockey players participated in their first ever rep hockey tournament during the weekend of December 4-6th, 2009 in Brampton.

The Avalanche was assigned a very competitive division consisting of OMHA teams from Brampton, Burlington and Aurora. Ancaster was up to the challenge and completed the round robin with a perfect record of 2 wins and a tie that helped secure first place and a date with the very tough Ajax Knights in the semi finals. Following 3 tough periods, Ancaster was victorious and headed to the Championship game against another tough foe, the Woolwich Wildcats.

Although Ancaster fell behind 3-1 early during the game, they never gave up. They battled back to tie the game with only a few precious minutes remaining on the clock. Unfortunately, Woolwich answered with a late goal and went onto defeat Ancaster. The Avalanche were crowned finalists and awarded silver medals for their accomplishments. Congratulations to John Paul Parente who was named tournament MVP.

The coaching staff and parents of the Tyke team are extremely proud of this group of boys. Great job and good luck at your next event in Detroit!!

Ancaster Atom AA’s continue to bring home the hardware bringing back Silver Medals from the Steel City!

This past weekend the Atom AA’s boarded the team bus and crossed the border to participate in the Pittsburgh Vipers AA Thanksgiving Classic in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The kids play can only be described as fantastic!

They started the tournament off on Friday by beating the Pittsburgh Arctic Foxes 5 – 1. They followed up the morning game with a strong performance against the Allegheny Badgers where they held off a late third period charge to win 4 – 3. The team kept rolling on Saturday and defeated the Southpointe Rink Rats 5 – 1 which meant they were undefeated in round robin play and claimed first place in their pool.

After the game it was back to the hotel for some swimming and mini sticks before boarding the bus Saturday night and going down to watch Crosby, Malkin and the rest of the Penguins destroy the New York Rangers.

The Championship game on Sunday was absolutely thrilling! The team squared off against the North Pittsburgh Wildcats who had also gone undefeated in the tournament. The game featured great saves, terrific playmaking, disallowed goals, and some questionable penalties. After falling behind 3 – 1 the Av’s roared back and tied the game up at 3’s late in the third period. With several more chances that just didn’t bounce the right way it turned out that the game wouldn’t be solved in regulation time and it was off to OT. Unfortunately, for the Av’s OT proved to be all about penalty killing as they were assessed two minor penalties and ended up playing a man short for the duration of the OT. The Av’s fought hard and managed to hold off the Wildcat’s for 3 minutes of short handed play before finally giving up the game winner and losing 4 -3.

As our bus driver Francois said to the kids he was very proud to be a Canadian and have such a wonderful group of kids represent not just our town but also our country! Congratulations Av’s on another terrific tournament.

Players: Paige Rynne, Bryce Robertson, Paul DuFour, Mark Randazzo, Mack Pattison, Daniel Giordano, Nolan Gallagher, Sandy Ciccarelli, Ryan Cross, Dylan Sprentz, Quinn Ireland, Harrison Larochelle, Aiden Richard, Connor Kennedy, Jacob Bellavia, Mitch Arsenault, Matthew Reale

Ancaster Atom AA’s Rock the Motor City and Bring Home Silver medals From the AA Motown Cup in Detroit Michigan!

This past weekend (Oct 16-18, 2009) started off with the Av’s playing the Mt. Clemons AA Wolves on the big ice at Joe Louis Arena home of the Detroit Red Wings. After beating the Wolves 6 – 1 and then dispatching the Detroit AA Compuware team 3 – 1 the Av’s took on the AA Mississauga Jets and played one of their best games all year as they were tied 0 – 0 mid way through the third period with our friends from down the QEW. Although the Av’s were buzzing all over it was the Jet’s who scored two quick goals and then added an empty net goal to beat the Av’s 3 – 0. The Championship Game ended up being a re-match with Mississauga and while the kids were recovering from a late night after attending the Colorado – Detroit shootout game the night before, the flu bug had also hit the team and the Jets jumped out to a 3 – 0 lead by the end of the first period. The Av’s battled back in the 2nd and 3rd periods to make a game of it before finally losing 6 – 3. It was a terrific weekend for not only the players but also their families. Congratulations Av’s on a terrific tournament!

Players : Paige Rynne, Bryce Robertson, Paul Dufour, Mark Randazzo, Mack Pattison, Daniel Giordano, Nolan Gallagher, Sandy Ciccarelli, Ryan Cross, Dylan Sprentz, Quinn Ireland, Harrison Larochelle, Aiden Richard, Connor Kennedy, Jacob Bellavia, Mitchell Arsenault, Matthew Reale

Peewee AA's Win Gold in Erie Tournament

The Ancaster Avalanche Minor Pee Wee AA hockey team travelled to Erie, PA and won the 2009 Hunter Faulkner Fall Face Off tournament this past Thanksgiving weekend. The team cruised through their three round-robin games before facing a tough St. Catharines Jr. Falcons team in the semi-final game. The Jr. Falcons led 3-1 going into the third period before the Avalanche stormed back with three unanswered goals to take a 4-3 lead. The Jr. Falcons then tied the game with only two seconds left on the clock to force the extra overtime period. The Avalanche scored in the first two minutes of overtime to claim their spot in the championship final.
